Day 12 | Green Pastures & Quiet Waters – Alex
Life can feel loud and relentless. Many of us in the States move from task to task without ever truly resting. Psalm 23:2 beckons us to a distinct rhythm, though, that wages war against our culture that idolizes busyness.
King David paints a rather simple but powerful image: green pastures and quiet waters. For sheep, these are essential. Green pastures provide much-needed nourishment and quiet waters provide safe and steady refreshment. Without them, sheep grow weak, anxious, and die. With them, they flourish.
Yet notice the wording, “He makes me lie down in green pastures.”[1] Sheep, like modern Americans, don’t tend to lie down easily. They’ll only rest when they feel safe, full, and free from fear. If anything is off, hunger, danger, tension, they stay on edge.
So, when David says the Shepherd makes him lie down, he is describing a deep level of trust and care despite the chaos of his life. The LORD provides what’s needed so rest becomes even possible.
This reveals something important about the Father’s heart. He’s not only leading you somewhere, He’s caring for you along the way. He knows your limits. He understands your need for rest even when you ignore it. And as your Good Shepherd, He leads you into rhythms of grace and spiritual disciplines where your heart, mind, soul, and hands can be restored.
In Matthew 11:28-29, King Jesus makes this even more clear when He says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”[2]
More than just a physical rest, King Jesus offers us a deep, inner renewal that comes from knowing Him.
Do you struggle to also accept this?
In a culture that worships productivity, rest can feel useless or even irresponsible. We push through exhaustion, come into work sick, fill every quiet moment with noise, and convince ourselves that we’ll just slow down later. But the Good Shepherd knows that without rhythmic rest, we don’t thrive… we wear down and become spiritually comatose.
“Green pastures” can represent the nourishment we receive from meditating on God’s Word and hearing the Spirit’s voice. It’s where truth and Ultimate Reality feeds our hearts and reshapes our thinking. “Quiet waters” can represent the peace that comes from practicing His presence in silence and solitude, a stillness that soothes our anxiety and reminds us that the LORD is in control. These are far from random moments; they’re places where the Good Shepherd spiritually forms us.
Yet often we resist. We scroll instead of being still. We rush instead of listening. We stay mentally and emotionally busy, even when we are physically exhausted. And in doing so, we miss the restoration God’s offering.
John Mark Comer (and Corrie ten Boom) once said, “If the devil can’t make you sin, he’ll make you busy… Both sin and busyness have the exact same effect, they cut off your connection to God, to other people, and even to your own soul.”[3]
Following King Jesus means trusting not just where He leads, but how He leads. Sometimes He leads you to slow down. Sometimes He invites you to step aside from the noise to better hear Him. Sometimes He gently “makes you lie down” by showing you your need for true rest.
This doesn’t forsake our responsibilities, but reshapes how we carry them. The college student can pause and breathe instead of existing in constant pressure about grades. The parent can find moments of quiet in the middle of a full house. The worker can trust that their worth is not tied to nonstop effort. The retiree can embrace a pace that allows for extra space for God’s presence.
His invitation is not complicated, but it’s intentional: to let the LORD lead you into rest. You don’t have to create peace on your own or purchase it on Amazon. You don’t have to force stillness. You simply have to follow.
When Jesus is your Good Shepherd, He doesn’t just drive you forward, He leads you to places where your soul can finally be restored.
REFLECT
1. What is currently keeping you from slowing down and experiencing true rest?
2. Where might King Jesus be inviting you to step away from noise or busyness?
3. What would it look like to trust Him with your need for rest today?
PRAYER
Good Shepherd, thank You for caring about my whole life, not just what I accomplish. You see when I’m tired, overwhelmed, and restless. Help me Holy Spirit to trust You enough to slow down and receive the rest only You can offer. Lead me to places where my heart, mind, soul, and hands can be renewed. Quiet my anxious thoughts and teach me Your way of life. I choose to follow You into the rhythms of rest today. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Amen.
TAKE ACTION TODAY
