Day 34 | The Overflowing Cup - Shawna
Anointing the head with oil in David’s time signified honor, hospitality, joy, and divine consecration. It marked guests as honored, represented abundance in times of feasting, and indicated the empowerment of God’s Spirit.
David stating “My cup overflows,” is also a statement of abundance. God does not provide “almost enough” or “just enough.” He provides lavishly, above and beyond everything we could need. Remember, with God as our shepherd, we lack nothing. We can be surrounded by enemies, yet experience peace, joy, contentment, and abundance.
This abundance resides in God’s presence. God has sent His Spirit to dwell in us and fill us to overflowing. And what does the Spirit produce in us?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control… Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. -Galatians 5:22-23, 25
What would it look like to overflow with love? Joy? Peace?
How many of us overflow with love to the point that it is easy to think of others first and to have patience with everyone?
What would it look like to overflow with peace every moment of every day?
This sounds fantastic and impossible, right?
Humanly, that is impossible, but we have access to all these things in abundance through the Spirit inside of us.
If we will surrender our lives, committing to follow Jesus, He promises to fill us with His Spirit. We often forget that Jesus gave up the rights of God when He came to earth (Philippians 2). Thus, the only way He was able to operate in the peace, joy, and love that He did was through the power of the Spirit working in Him and through His connection to the Father. We have the same Spirit Jesus did. We have the same access to the Father through Jesus’ death and resurrection. God truly has filled us to overflowing with His Spirit, so why do we live as if there is only a drop in the cup?
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. -2 Peter 1:3
Why do we settle for a cheap imitation? Why do we settle for what society sees as normal? I don’t know about you, but I want to experience God’s presence, hear His voice, and see Him work through me in supernatural ways. I want to be so overflowing with His Spirit that others are drawn to Him and lives are changed. I long for something more… don’t you? He has given you everything you need. Your cup overflows.
REFLECT
1. How has God used me in my life in ways I never thought possible?
2. Do I recognize and feel God’s Spirit in me?
3. Do I allow the Spirit to overflow in me, spilling out love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control?
PRAYER
Spirit, fill me up so I overflow. I commit to spending time with you, sitting quietly with you, walking with you, talking with you, and listening to your voice. Overcome my sinfulness and let your fruit be what flows through my life. I know that it’s your will that we would bear much fruit, so right now I pray confidently, knowing I am in your will when I pray that (Name at least five people) would be filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Amen.
TAKE ACTION TODAY
Bask in God’s abundance. Go through this day reminding yourself that He fills your cup so it overflows!
