Introduction & How to Use
Psalm 23 is one of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture. Many of us have heard it at funerals, read it during difficult seasons, or memorized it somewhere along the way. It is comforting, beautiful, and deeply personal. But Psalm 23 is more than a passage to read when life is hard. It is an invitation to a new way of life where God is our Shepherd.
David begins with a simple but life-changing declaration: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1, NIV). If the LORD is truly our Shepherd, then we are not left to lead ourselves, carry every burden, control every outcome, or figure out life in our own strength. We belong to Jesus, our Good Shepherd. He knows us, leads us, restores us, protects us, provides for us, and stays near to us throughout every season.
This devotional is a 40-day journey through Psalm 23 designed to help you slow down, listen deeply, and follow your Shepherd more closely. Each day will focus on one phrase, image, or truth from this psalm. Together, we will walk through green pastures and quiet waters, through valleys and battles, to the table of abundance and the forever home we have in the presence of the LORD.
This journey is structured around a Monday through Friday rhythm. Each week includes four devotional readings and one Reflect & Respond day. Every Friday is intentionally set aside as space to catch up, look back, pray, and respond to what God has been showing you. These days are not filler. They are a built-in opportunity to move from information to transformation.
As you walk through these 40 days, do not just read to finish. Read to listen. Read to respond. Bring your real life to the Shepherd: your exhaustion, celebrations, questions, grief, fear, sin, schedule, family, future, and desire for control. Let Him speak into the places where you are tired, hurried, distracted, comfortable, or stuck. Let Him lead you toward rest, restoration, courage, obedience, and deeper trust.
This devotional will encourage you, but it will also challenge you. Psalm 23 comforts us because the LORD is our Shepherd, but it also confronts us since we are just sheep. We are not the shepherds of our own lives. We were not created to follow our own path, carry our own burdens, or live a faith that stays safe, shallow, and convenient. Jesus is inviting us into something better: to Know Him more deeply, Live like Him more faithfully, and Love like Him more sacrificially.
So, before you begin, ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart. Ask Jesus to help you hear His voice. Ask the Father to form you into a person who does not merely believe in the Shepherd but actually follows Him. Over the next 40 days, take the next step with Him one day at a time, one prayer at a time, one act of trust and obedience at a time.
Consider this your invitation to walk with your Good Shepherd. To follow His lead and allow Him to restore, comfort, challenge, and draw you closer to Himself.
Welcome to the journey He designed for you to go on!
