Day 23 | His Name Sake – John
Our shepherd is capable of guiding us down the right paths that lead to our flourishing. Apart from the blessings and benefits we receive and experience when we obediently follow our Shepherd’s direction down these right paths that He has built for us, we also need to realize that, as His sheep, we represent and reflect the reputation of our Shepherd wherever we go and in every situation we find ourselves in.
While we benefit from the graciousness of our Shepherd, we have to seriously ask why David intentionally highlighted God’s motivation for being our Shepherd. David could have ended verse 3 by stating that He guides me along the right paths. But he didn’t because that would be an incomplete picture of who God is for David and for us today.
David’s phrase “for His name’s sake” reveals something profound about God’s motivation. God’s care for you as one of His sheep stems, not from anything you have done, but flows directly from the fame of his name.[1] This should reframe your entire relationship with the Shepherd of your soul. God’s actions aren’t primarily about David’s (or your) welfare, but about His own character and reputation. That’s because God’s “name” stands for his character and reputation. His name reveals who He is. We do this in our own lives. When someone hears your name, they will naturally think of specific characteristics and qualities that describe you for who you are. When you hear the name Michael Jordan or Steve Jobs or Taylor Swift, certain thoughts generate simply because of their name and reputation.
Our Shepherd has staked his reputation on how His sheep represent Him to those who are not following after Him or traveling down the right path that He has designed for us all to travel down and be transformed by. God, also, is not exclusively leading us as our Shepherd because He owes us anything, needs anything from us, or is dependent upon us in any way. Rather, God is our Shepherd because that is simply who He is and because of who He is He will act and behave the way in which He chooses to do so. While it is wonderful that we benefit from who He is and the characteristics that He is comprised of, David is showing us that God also has His reputation in mind when He guides, provides, protects, and cares for us.
This is a really freeing thought because it takes the weight off my shoulders and puts it back on His. There is nothing I can do that will cause God to love me more or make me worthy of His affectionate care. He loves me because that is who He is. He cares for me because that is who He is. He guides me down the right paths that bless, benefit, and transform my life because that is who He is. He protects me from my Enemy, my emotions, and my tendencies to wander away from Him because that is who He is. He provides for me to the point that I lack nothing, not because I’m awesome, but because that is who He is.
Psalm 23 beautifully guides us to a life of surrender because it vividly shows us that when we follow our Shepherd, then we cease living our lives for ourselves, our careers, any future promotions or positions of influence and leadership. We trade in living for our kids, our spouse, comfort, and building up our own kingdoms for true rest, refreshment, and blessing. When you start living for His name’s sake, it changes how you show up. It changes what you prioritize and pursue. It shifts your focus away from yourself and causes you to approach everything in your life with the following question in mind: Am I living my life in such a way that represents my Shepherd well and brings glory and honor to Him?
REFLECT
Where am I most tempted to live for my own name, reputation, comfort, success, or control?
What area of my life currently represents my Shepherd well?
What area of my life may be misrepresenting Him with my spouse/significant other, my kids, coworkers, friends, or neighbors?
PRAYER
Jesus, You are my Shepherd. Thank You for loving me, guiding me, protecting me, and restoring me because of who You are, not because of what I have earned. Forgive me for the ways I have lived for my own name, built my own kingdom, and tried to carry a weight that belongs to You. Teach me to follow You in every area of my life. Shape my work, my marriage, my parenting, my friendships, my thoughts, my words, and my priorities so that they reflect Your goodness. Lead me along the right paths for Your name’s sake. Amen.
TAKE ACTION TODAY
Throughout your day you will be presented with countless opportunities to represent your Shepherd well. So, pause before you walk into that room, start that meeting, respond to that text, correct your kid, or make that decision, and quietly ask yourself: “How can I represent my Shepherd well in this moment?”
