Day 21 | How Our Shepherd Leads Us – Alex

Jul 6, 2026    Alexander Kes

We all desire direction, especially when life feels too up in the air or decisions affect the people around us. Should I take the job? How do I navigate this complicated relationship? What’s next for me LORD? Psalm 23 reminds us that we never have to figure it out alone. Our Good Shepherd leads us.

King David in Psalm 23:3b writes, “He (God) guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.”[1]

This isn’t only a promise of direction, but a promise of how God leads. The Shepherd doesn’t push His sheep from behind, He leads them from the very front. He goes ahead of them and they follow the sound of His voice.

The phrase “right paths” here can also mean “paths of righteousness.” In other words, the LORD’s guidance is for both getting us to the right destination and for shaping us to become like King Jesus. His leadership spiritually forms our character and leads us into lives that reflect His goodness, integrity, and truth amidst a culture that worships sin, hypocrisy, and lies.

In John 10:27, this is reinforced when King Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”[2] Notice the beautiful simplicity of our relationship to Him…

He speaks.

We listen.

We follow.

It’s not complicated but does require attentiveness and trust.

So, how does our Shepherd lead us today?

First, the LORD leads us through His Word. The Bible reveals the Trinity’s heart and character. His wisdom and His ways. It gives clarity in a world that’s full of confusion. When you open your Bible, you aren’t just reading information like a history book or even worse, a supposed legend, you are hearing the voice of your Good Shepherd.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”[3]

Although it doesn’t illuminate the whole road ahead, it does give enough light for the next right step.

Second, the LORD leads us through His Spirit. When you surrender your life to King Jesus, God’s Spirit now dwells within you, guiding, prompting, and convicting you. Sometimes it’s a clear sense of direction; other times it’s a quiet nudge. The Spirit works to help align your heart, mind, soul, and hands with God’s will and gifts you wisdom and discernment in real-time decisions.

Third, the LORD leads us through wise counsel. God tends to use other people (mature Christ followers, mentors, and trusted friends) to speak truth into our lives. We aren’t meant to navigate life in isolation. The Good Shepherd uses biblical community to keep us on the right paths for His name’s sake.

Fourth, the LORD leads through everyday moments. Open and closed doors, opportunities and delays, these can all be part of how God directs our steps. While circumstances alone shouldn’t determine our decisions, they can reinforce or redirect us as we seek Him first.

Yet here’s what we need to understand, the Good Shepherd rarely gives us the full map. Following King Jesus isn’t about having everything figured out or being in control, it’s about trusting Him enough to move forward one right step at a time. That can feel very uncomfortable, especially if you’re “Type A”.

However, His ways are higher than ours and His timing is often different than we expect. Notice the reason David gives, “for His name’s sake.” God leads us in a way that reflects His character. His reputation is tied to His faithfulness. That means we can trust that He will not lead us in ways that contradicts who He is.

He is good, wise, and trustworthy, and His guidance will reflect that. For the student making decisions about the future, the parent raising a family in the way of King Jesus, the worker navigating pressure, or the Christ follower seeking clarity, this matters.

You aren’t alone in figuring out your path. The Good Shepherd is actively leading you. Your role isn’t to force direction, but to stay near to the Father’s heart.. Listen for His voice. Stay grounded in His Word. Seek wise counsel. And take the next step in faithfulness.

REFLECT

1.    Where in your life are you currently seeking spiritual direction?

Which of these ways, God’s Word, His Spirit, wise counsel, or everyday moments do you need to pay more attention to?

What is one next right step of faithfulness the Shepherd may be asking you to take?

PRAYER

King Jesus, my Good Shepherd, thank You for not leaving me to figure life out on my own. You guide me with wisdom, patience, and care. Help me to hear Your voice more clearly and to trust wherever You are leading no matter the cost. Give me a heart that is willing to follow, even when I don’t see the full path ahead. Align my heart, soul, mind, and hands with Your will and shape my life to reflect Your goodness. Teach me to stay near to You and to take each step in faith. I trust that You are leading me in the right way. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Amen.

TAKE ACTION TODAY

Identify one decision or area where you need spiritual direction. Spend time in Scripture and prayer about it today and write down one clear next step you sense the Spirit leading you to take… then act on it.
